Body Count - Last Days
Maybe Ice-T was trying hard to infuriate and offend when he put together Body Count's Violent Demise: The Last Days, but he should have spent a bit more time on the riffs and lyrics. Sure, "Interview," which features a vignette about a journalist being executed for dissing the band (gulp!), and "Strippers," which includes the scintillating chorus "Strippers, I want my dick sucked," are both disturbing, but the puerile prurience hardly obscures the group's second-rate songwriting. Throughout the album, Ice-T moans and barks above repetitive, second-hand guitar lines, and even when the rapper lambastes O.J. Simpson on "I Used to Love Her," he fails to say anything even mildly thought-provoking. -Jon Wiederhorn-

V.A. - The Best of Flipside Video Volume #5 (DVD)
Coming in at number five out seven in the "Best of" video series, this release features punk legends Youth Brigade and 7 seconds. Youth Brigade starts out the video with several different performances: Mendiola's Ballroom & riot Huntington Park '83, Olympic Auditorium/LA 03/02/84, and Perkin's Palace/Pasadena 04/84. They play through many of their original hits including "Sink With California," "Sound & Fury," and "What are You Fighting For." I saw Youth Brigade at the House of Blues last year and the singer, Shawn Stern, still looks the same after all these years, even though it looks like he's playing with a new lineup.
Following Youth Brigade is an equally youthful 7 Seconds, also performing live at several different locations: Olympic Auditorium 03/84, Sun Valley Sportsmen's Center 11/84 and Skateway/Placentia 11/8/85. Dawning his football eyeliner, Kevin Seconds leads the band through some for my favorite songs like "Young til I Die," "Regress, No Way" and "Out of Touch."
Like Target Video, Flipside Video was known for their quality video productions. The audio is great for the era, and I highly recommend this video if your a fan of these bands. Like my other posts, this video is currently out-of-print, and I doubt this will ever be released via DVD. Ironically, I did find a DVD copy of this on EBAY complete with artwork and information (it looks commercial), although I doubt it was an authorized duplication (made in Canada).-80spunkvideos.blogspot.com-

Chaos UK - Live At Oslo TV (DVD)
Here's another great UK hardcore punk band for you that dates as far back as 1979. Chaos UK went through as many lineup changes and shows as the best of them, and this TV pro shot from June 2, 1987 features the band at its' peak, slamming through 15 thrash tunes.
Not many bands can make it through several lead vocalist changes (Black Flag comes to mind) and still retain popularity like Chaos UK. Only two members (Kaos being the most notable because he sang at times too) from the original lineup followed the band through the history. They released many albums, toured the world, and for their 20-year stint I'm surprised they weren't more popular in the U.S.
This particular video looks like it was ripped from TV via VHS, so it is a little blurry. However, overall the audio and video are great. On a side note, it's interesting to see how TV video quality (effects, transitions) have changed in the past 20 years!

V.A. - New Breed Tape Compilation
This legendary tape released by Urban Style Records in 1987. The characters behind this masterpiece were Freddy Alva and Chaka Malik (Burn member and Orange 9mm). The idea of the compilation was only an excuse to release some of Absolution, which was a hit in the hardcore scene in New York despite not having taken the position that really deserved. It is a great compilation that gathers bands like Absolution, Life's Blood, Outburst, Our Gang, Pressure Release, Breakdown, True Colors, Show Of Force, Direct Approach, Raw Deal, Abombanation, Beyond, Direct, Uppercut, Fit Of Anger, Discipline, Bad Trip, Under Pressure, and Stand Proud. Here I give you a link where United Webzine he does an interview with Freddy Alva NYHC on aspects of the late 80's and early 90's and is no mention of the production of the New Breed Tape.

V.A. - New York Hardcore Where The Wild Things Are
This compilation, compiled by the NYHC The Way It Is by Revelation Records, is the most important of NYHC records in the late eighties. Contains the excellent bands Outburst, Killing Time (formerly known as Raw Deal), Breakdown, Maximum Penalty, Sheer Terror, Life's Blood, Uppercut, NBSH and Gorilla Biscuits. (with a cover of the Buzzcocks classic "Sitting Around At Home"). Many of these bands did not have the mentality of the Lower East Side as Warzone and Agnostic Front and also the positive attitude of the Youth Crew bands as Gorilla Biscuits and Youth of Today but managed a more black humor, sarcastic and joking with a sound a little more metallic and aggressive. It is the first release of the famous New York independent label Blackout! Records and was released in 1989 on vinyl format 12 "with a re edition CD. Enjoy!

I think many have heard of this great compilation of 7 ". Posted by Irate Records in 1990. Assembles 2 bands from New Jersey (Rorschach and Turning Point) and 3 of New York (Born Against, Citizens Arrest and Burn). This compiled brings a song that is not on the CD Discography Citizens Arrest "... Pain", the song "Insecurity" Turning Point (which was later re-recorded for the compilation Rebuilding), comes the song "Decay" Burn (which was also re-recorded later for Rebuilding compiled), a clean version of "Checkmate" Rorschach (Rorschach curiously songs that appear in compiled, Charles Maggio's voice does not sound as loud) and the song of Born Against , Pro Choice and anthem that comes in many compiled in the band involved, "Mary and Child". Life's Blood - Demo '88
This is one of the many bands, we will explore in this special, which has not been paid enough attention due to the popularity of other local bands of his era.
Life's Blood was born in New York in late 1987 and existed until late 1988. Its members, first year university students, were: Adam Woodrow on guitar, Jason O'Toole (developer and publisher of Combined Effort Records) on vocals, Neil Burke on bass and John Edward Joseph Kriksciun on drums.
The sound that managed to Life's Blood was just great to mix well the hardcore New Yorker of the time with intelligent lyrics and challenging. For example, "Never Make A Change" emphasizes the selfishness of people who think making a change to their decisions, when in fact they do not because they lock themselves in their false pride and feel good about themselves to benefit others.
After the breakup of the band, formed Adam Born Against, Neil participated in Sinking Body, and Men's Recovery Project, and he collaborated with Joseph Absolution during the last days of their existence. I do not know what happened to Jason and his label Combined Effort Records.
Due to the short existence of the band, Life's Blood just got a demo, a single but spectacular 7 "called Defiance, a split with a punk band called Sticks And Stones, and songs that appeared in different compiled as Murders Among Us, NYHC: Where The Wild Things Are, Look At All Children Now and the New Breed Tape

Beyond - No Longer At Ease
Another excellent band. Beyond born in 1988 in a "battle of the bands" a high school in Long Island, NY. At the time, called Third Planet and sang Tom Capone. Capone had decided to have a serious band, took over as guitar and then recruited Kevin in his voice, Lance on bass and Dom on drums. It changed its name to Beyond and quickly recorded a demo managed to sell 500 copies (which for a new band and circle is fairly underground).
Shortly after the great impact of their demo, Capone wanted people more involved in the project and replaced Alan Dom on drums while Vic Lance replaced on bass. This is the most memorable training Beyond. Beyond was a break in the straight edge hardcore scene of New York, with fast songs (with a thrash influence) and points quite smart, positive and critical at a time, which garnered several perspectives, including those of John "Porcell" Porcelly (guitarist of Youth of Today and Judge) that they offered to remove material through his label Schism Records.
Beyond, to be with Schism, rejected a proposal by Revelation Records. Beyond Schism disappeared and decided to take their LP No Longer At Ease in Combined Effort (remember? Jason's label Life's Blood). Soon after, Combined Effort also ended. After the release of the LP, Vic moved with his family to San Diego. Beyond played a few shows with Eddie on bass and finally broke up in 1990. After the breakup of the band, Tom and Alan formed Quicksand, Vic joined Inside Out, Kevin was part of 1.6 band. In 2006, Beyond did a couple of concerts of meeting with Kevin, Vic, Tom and Dom

V.A. - Thrash It Up! 4-way Fastcore Split
This is a great 4-way split of Evacuate Records (Singapore recognized label that has released albums in Asia and western bands and Yacopsae Common Enemy, and Asian hardcore punk bands) which brings the best bands in Southeast Asia fastcore .
We have to Yogyakarta (Singapore), UnderxAttack (Singapore), Suru Anak Muda (Malaysia) and Relationshit (Indonesia) all in the vein of fastcore / thrashcore has enough strength and reception in those parts of the Asian world.
